Chapter Thirteen
My jaw dropped. "You want to adopt me?"
That was insane.
"As my heir," Giovanni started, "you would be untouchable. My entire coven, as well as all of our people, would fight to keep you safe from him."
"Yes, but..." My brow flickered. I raised my eyes to look across to the man who had raised me. "Grandfather?"
He smiled at me. "This is a choice you have to make, Chance. I can't make it for you."
"I know, but...the Sutton name. You always talked about how important it was. According to these papers, if I let Giovanni adopt me, I'll become Chance Visconti. I won't be a Sutton anymore."
"You will always be a Sutton, my dear boy. Nothing can ever change that, but we both know your father will take the Sutton title to his grave before he passes it on to you."
"I don't care about the title."
My grandfather chuckled. "No, you never did."
I felt a twinge of guilt at my grandfather's words. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I am proud of the man you've become, whether you keep the Sutton name or not. And the title means nothing without a good man behind it." My grandfather shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe it is time for it to die with your father."
I wasn't so sure about that, but I still didn't want it.
"If I was to agree to this, would I have to become a vampire?"
"You cannot become a vampire," Giovanni said. He gestured to my throat. "Remember the runes on your throat? They prevent any vampire from transforming you."
"So, I would remain human then?" I had to be sure. I hadn't wigged out at the idea that my grandfather was a vampire simply because I was so happy that he was still alive, but I wasn't sure I wanted to become one.
"You would."
I dropped my gaze back down to the papers. "I need to think about this."
"Of course," Giovanni replied.
I glanced up quickly. "It's nothing personal, but this is a big decision."
Giovanni smiled. "I understand, Chance. I take no insult at your words. I would worry if you didn't need time to think about it."
The man stood, my grandfather getting up and standing beside him. "Why don't we get you settled into a room so you can get some rest, and we can talk some more later?"
I nodded absently as I closed the file and then got to my feet. As I started out of the room, I paused and turned back, throwing my arms around my grandfather. "I'm so glad you're alive."
It had been hell thinking he was dead. I didn't even care that he was a vampire now, as long as he was here.
My grandfather hugged me back. "I'm glad I'm alive, too, son. I didn't want to miss watching you become the man you are."
I gave my grandfather one more squeeze before releasing him and walking out of the room. Dante was waiting for me outside the office.
"If you will follow me, sir."
I was too tired to argue about the whole sir thing.
